KUCHING, July 13: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has earned a place in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) with the iconic ‘itut’, an 18.3-metre tall traditional Melanau swing which is the main attraction at the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) 2025.

According to TVS, the swing, built at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 by the Kampung Nangka Melanau Welfare Association, attracted 2,288 visitors, exceeding the initial target of 2,000 people due to good weather throughout the 10-day festival, which began on July 3.

SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh received the MBOR certificate from a representative, Edwin Yeoh, at the closing ceremony of the 21st edition of BCF on Saturday (July 12), which Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian officiated.

Dr Sim said this year’s BCF showcased the diversity of Borneo’s culture, music, and ethnic traditions through various performances, community activities, and cultural exhibitions.

“During these 10 days, the public had the opportunity to witness the creativity and traditions of various communities, thus strengthening the unity and identity of Borneo,” he said in a speech read by Sarawak Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee.

He also expressed his appreciation to all individuals, government agencies, cultural activists, traders, and enforcement officers for their commitment to making this year’s festival a success.

According to him, events like BCF are not just entertainment platforms, but also play an essential role in strengthening social ties, promoting tourism and improving community well-being.

“It is a key element in building a resilient, united, and culturally centric community,” he said.

Dr Sim also congratulated SMC and its organising partners for making this edition one of the most successful and hoped that the spirit of unity and appreciation for culture highlighted throughout the festival would continue to flourish in the daily lives of the community. — DayakDaily
