KUCHING, Oct 6: The Iban community of Batang Ai has made history with a Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) recognition for staging the Longest Non-stop ‘Batang Ai’ Drum Performance, in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the Batang Ai Hydroelectric Plant (HEP).
The cultural feat, held on Oct 3 at Dewan Mengiling within Batang Ai HEP’s Operator Residence, saw 129 participants across seven groups performing the traditional Iban gendang continuously for eight hours, from 8am to 4pm.
The drummers showcased distinctive Batang Ai rhythms such as Malut, Ngelaki, Bebendai, Gendang Indu, Tanggung, Tanjak Ai, Pelandok, Betal and Tawak, reflecting the rich cultural heritage and collective spirit of the community.
According to a press release, Sarawak Energy, in supporting the anniversary celebration, said the performance illustrated how local traditions thrive alongside modern progress as Batang Ai continues to evolve as a cornerstone of Sarawak’s renewable energy journey.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who officiated the anniversary celebration today, described Batang Ai as a “symbol of what is possible when foresight, engineering excellence and social responsibility come together,” while emphasising its role in shaping Sarawak as a renewable energy leader.
The Batang Ai HEP, commissioned in 1985 as Sarawak’s first hydropower project, has been generating 94MW of clean renewable electricity, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and catalysing development in Lubok Antu and beyond.
Its 40th anniversary celebration comes ahead of Global Hydropower Day on Oct 11, highlighting Batang Ai’s place as the starting point of Sarawak’s renewable energy journey.
Also present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; Sarawak Minister of Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi; Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) and Sarawak Energy chairman Dato Ibrahim Baki; Deputy Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment Datuk Dr Malcom Musen Lamoh who is also Batang Ai assemblyman; Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili; and Sri Aman Resident Mahra Salleh. — DayakDaily
