KAPIT, June 11: A man was shot dead in the jungle on Wednesday evening after being mistaken for a wild deer.

Kapit OCPD deputy supt Freddy Bian said that at about 4.15pm on Wednesday (June 10), the police received a report concerning a man who was shot in Seranau forest.

A police team rushed to the scene and found a man lay dead on the ground. The victim was later identified as Buiee Ujoh, 66, from Rumah Usit, Sungai Seranau.

“Our investigation shows that the victim had gone to the jungle to look for ‘daun sabung’ a wild vegetable. When he was at a small stream, he was shot at once in the chest by a suspect who had mistaken him for a deer,” he said.

DSP Freddy said the suspect, 44, later surrendered himself at Kapit police station.

He has been remanded for investigation under Section 307A of the Penal Code, Section 8(1) of the Firearm Act 1960 and Section 6(1) of the Immigration Act 1959.—DayakDaily
