KUCHING, Sept 25: Hui Sing Recreational Park has been upgraded with new sheltered facilities for exercise and community activities, as well as a library designed to encourage a stronger reading culture among residents.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the upgraded park is scheduled to be officially launched on Sunday (Sept 27).
Speaking to reporters during the Mooncake Festival celebration at Hui Sing Recreational Park today, Wee said the enhancements were aimed at making the park a more vibrant and functional community space for residents of all ages.
The newly added sheltered areas will allow visitors, particularly senior citizens, to continue exercising and participating in activities regardless of weather conditions.
In addition, the park now houses a community library, an initiative Wee said was intended to encourage residents to spend more time reading and less time on their mobile devices.
“We want to cultivate a reading habit among the public rather than having everyone constantly focused on their handphones,” he said.
Wee said MBKS envisioned its parks as more than just venues for morning walks and exercise, but also as community hubs where residents could gather, interact and organise activities.
He encouraged neighbourhood associations and community groups to engage with the council if they wished to organise programmes at the park and required support.
“We have provided the facilities, and we want to ensure they are fully utilised by the community,” he said.
Wee added that MBKS would continue enhancing public parks across the city, with plans to upgrade one park each year as part of its long-term strategy to improve public amenities.
The initiative, he said, is aimed at creating more spaces for social interaction, strengthening community bonds and providing families with welcoming environments to spend quality time together. – DayakDaily
