KUCHING, Aug 21: A major fire destroyed a factory and damaged several nearby houses along Semaba Road in Mile 5, here this evening.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak responded to the emergency at 5.22pm and dispatched firefighters from the Kota Sentosa Station, with assistance from stations in Batu Lintang, Tabuan Jaya and Siburan.
Fire engines arrived at the scene at 5.35pm and found a two-storey semi-permanent factory measuring approximately 150 by 100 feet engulfed in flames.
According to Bomba, the blaze spread to nearby structures, including a house located beside the road and two workers’ houses situated behind the factory. Firefighters worked swiftly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to an adjacent factory.
The operation was brought under control at 6.40pm, with firefighters continuing overhaul works to extinguish remaining hotspots and eliminate any remaining hotspots.
Initial assessments showed that the factory was completely destroyed. A house identified as No. 468, measuring about 60 by 45 feet, sustained approximately 30 per cent damage, while another neighbouring house measuring 50 by 35 feet also suffered 30 per cent damage.
A semi-detached house at the front of the affected area, measuring 45 by 65 feet, sustained about 75 per cent damage.
A total of 34 firefighters and officers were deployed to the scene.
No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident. The cause of the fire and the extent of losses are under investigation. — DayakDaily
