KUALA LUMPUR, March 12: In 2024 and 2025, a total of 206 graduate medical officers resigned during their housemanship, citing personal reasons, family matters, or feeling unprepared for the demanding training.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad noted that this figure represents a decline from 2023, which saw 254 resignations among UD41-grade medical officers, including house officers and newly graduated doctors.
“This resignation trend shows a decline, with 114 in 2024 and 92 in 2025,” he told the Dewan Negara, as reported by TVS News today.
Dr Dzulkefly was responding to Senator Mohd Hasbie Muda, who requested the number of medical officers leaving during their housemanship.
“They left due to personal factors, such as family matters, feeling unprepared for housemanship training, or a desire to pursue other fields.
“Others opted to continue their studies, work abroad, or faced health challenges,” he explained.
He added that as of January 2026, only 56 per cent of the 12,198 housemanship slots nationwide had been filled, with 6,820 positions occupied across 48 training hospitals. — DayakDaily
