Above the Clouds in Keked Tungan Camping Site
Hidden amidst thick forests and towering mountains, high above the clouds that blanket the sky like a vast sea, lies the breathtaking Keked Tungan Camping Site. Perched at the border where Sarawak and Kalimantan meet, this tranquil haven rests within Kampung Sapit, Padawan.
To reach this retreat, we crossed a traditional Bidayuh bamboo bridge, followed by a short hike to the campsite. Eventually, the tanju’ came into view—an elevated platform crafted predominantly from bamboo. Its zinc roof provides reliable shelter, while sturdy bamboo stilts hold it high above the ground, embodying the timeless charm of traditional Bidayuh architecture. The open, airy structure blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, creating a rustic yet inviting space. Though simple in design, Keked Tungan’s tanju’ strikes a thoughtful balance between tradition and comfort, offering essential amenities that elevate the camping experience.
A practical kitchen space, a designated gathering area, and a clean, well-maintained toilet made it more than just a campsite. It is a sanctuary where nature and convenience coexist. Tents are pitched on the tanju’’s side without roofs, facing the vast grasslands where the sea of clouds appears at dawn. During the tent setup, it rained—a welcome blessing that cooled us down after the hike and added to the charm of the experience.

With only a generator for power, the limited electricity and lack of coverage enhanced the retreat, as gadgets remained tucked away, leaving the mind free to wander. Away from modern distractions, the atmosphere was peaceful and serene. That night, the sky was astonishingly clear, adorned with countless stars shining brightly, unspoiled by city lights.
As the sun set, family and friends gathered for dinner, sharing stories and laughter that made the night feel even warmer. The mix of good company and the cool evening air deepened the sense of tranquillity, creating memories destined to linger long after the journey’s end. The sound of crickets chirping and owls calling formed a natural symphony, harmonising with the earthy allure of the quiet night.
When the generator’s hum faded, a profound silence settled in. The stillness, broken only by the gentle rustle of leaves, felt almost surreal—as if the world itself had paused. In that calm, we truly disconnected from the chaos of daily life, embracing the purity and simplicity of nature.
At Keked Tungan, time slows, and the soul awakens to the splendour of creation—a reminder that in the quiet corners of the earth, His wonders shine the brightest. —DayakDaily
