KUCHING, June 17: The vibrant colours of the Sarawak flag soared high above the cityscape as it was gracefully hoisted up on the nation’s tallest flagpole near the iconic Fort Margherita today.
Standing at an impressive height of 99 metres, the flagpole symbolises the Sarawakian people’s sovereignty, pride, unity, patriotism, and aspirations.
The sight of the Sarawak flag flying majestically against the backdrop of the golden Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex and the clear blue sky evoked a deep sense of patriotism and admiration among onlookers.
The grandeur of the moment was further accentuated by the historical significance of Fort Margherita, a timeless landmark that has witnessed the State’s rich history unfold over the years.
As the flag gracefully dances in the wind, its vibrant colours represent the diverse cultures, traditions, and heritage that define Sarawak’s unique identity. It acts as a beacon of unity, reminding the people of Sarawak of their shared values and common purpose, transcending ethnicities, religions, and backgrounds.
With this year marking Sarawak’s 60th year of independence, the hoisting of the Sarawak flag on this monumental flagpole signifies a poignant milestone in the State’s journey towards progress and self-identity and symbolises the strength and resilience of its people.
The construction of the flagpole is reportedly funded by the private sector, with Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) as the project’s implementing agency and KKB Engineering Berhad as the design and construction contractor.
The flagpole and the surrounding area, which reportedly cost RM30 million to construct, were funded as part of the private entity’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.
In a recent news report by DayakDaily, DBKU director Mohamed Khaidir Abang said that the work progress on the flagpole project currently stands at 66.97 per cent and was 3.5 per cent ahead of schedule.
He added that the targeted completion date is scheduled on Nov 30 this year. — DayakDaily
