KUCHING, March 4: There are plans to transform the Russian yacht, Lodya ‘Pilgrim’, which ran aground on the shores of Kampung Senau, Oya, Mukah, into a tourist attraction.

Malaysia Deputy Minister of Economy Dato Hanifah Hajar Taib revealed that former Senator Jaziri Alkaf Abdillah Suffian proposed the idea during a visit to her office on Monday (March 3).

“One of the suggestions is for the vessel to be donated to the Sarawak government as a new tourism attraction, with necessary restoration works undertaken,” she shared in a Facebook post.

However, Hanifah who is also Mukah MP, said that discussions are still in the early stages, and any decision will require the agreement of multiple parties.

The Lodya ‘Pilgrim’ is a wooden yacht with historical significance, showcasing craftsmanship influences from the 16th to 18th centuries.

“It has embarked on numerous expeditions and has sailed around the world for many years,” she added.

The yacht has drawn significant attention from locals since it became stranded on Dec 20, 2024.

It was en route from the Philippines to Kuching when it was caught in a storm and ran aground on a sandbar, leaving its four crew members stranded. — DayakDaily
