KUCHING, Apr 4: Habitat for Indigenous and Urban Program (Hidup) today distributed food items to 30 families of Kampung Mambong, Kampung Sikog and Kampung Semadang, Kota Padawan.

Hidup president George Young Si Ricord Jr said that this was the second week they have carried out this kind of outreach programme to those in dire need during the month-long Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

Despite this difficult and challenging time, George managed to get the necessary support from friends and donors who willingly donated these essential items.

For today’s outreach programme, Hidup received a major boost for their effort when it received the food items from Choice Supermarket Group.

“Those families whose likelihood were affected by the MCO especially the daily wage earners were prioritised in the distribution of the food items.

“A lot of these families now do not have a source of income and we can only wonder what kind of lives they are living right now if we continue to shut our eyes and ears to the plight of these community,” George said today.

He added that Hidup will continue with its humanitarian effort and will respond to the community’s need whenever they are being called upon.

“Hidup is committed to connecting people sharing a similar outlook and civil society together to provide empowerment and dignity to the less fortunate segment of society,” he stressed.

George related how touched he was upon receiving a call from a lady from Jalan Stephen Yong, Kuching who requested food aid for her daily wage earner neighbour.

“This lady’s attitude in showing concern for her neighbour shows the caring and gentle side of Sarawakians.

“So let’s make sense of this greatest crisis of this generation by being compassionate and caring for our own community,” added George.
