KUCHING, Oct 11: The Ministry of Health (MOH) is conducting a thorough investigation into the death of a four-year-old child in Samarahan, suspected to be linked to an Influenza A infection.
In a Bernama news, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said initial laboratory tests confirmed that the child tested positive for Influenza A. However, the primary complication identified was brain inflammation (encephalitis), which led to seizures.
“Laboratory results confirmed an Influenza A infection, but it is important to note that the main complication was encephalitis, which commonly causes seizures. This condition, however, can also be triggered by various other viruses.
“Hence, we are not yet able to conclusively confirm that Influenza A was the cause of death, even though early findings point in that direction. It is best that we wait for the final diagnosis,” he told reporters after officiating the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2025 celebration in Putrajaya today.
Dr Dzulkefly extended his condolences to the victim’s family and emphasised the importance of awaiting the full investigation report before drawing any conclusions.
He said that most influenza cases detected nationwide have presented with mild symptoms and that the situation remains under control despite a number of concerning outbreaks.
To date, 116 outbreaks and 97 clusters of influenza have been reported. While the situation should not be taken lightly, Dr Dzulkefly said there is no need for public panic.
He urged those experiencing symptoms to wear face masks, practise good hand hygiene, avoid crowded areas, and protect others from infection.
“The MOH will continue to closely monitor the situation through its Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) surveillance systems
“We are also working closely with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to provide the latest information and guidance on the current situation,” he added. — DayakDaily
