Health laboratory complex to be built at Kuching-Serian Road

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13: The Health Ministry has planned to build a health laboratory complex at Mile 11, Kuching-Serian Road.

Deputy Health Minister II Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the project was approved under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP) Rolling Plan Four.


“The scope of the proposed project includes a public health laboratory and a food quality and safety laboratory.

“The public health laboratory includes infectious diseases laboratory which can be used to identify and detect Covid-19,” said Aaron at Parliament today when replying to Betong MP Datuk Robert Lawson Chuat who queried whether the Ministry of Health was looking into building of special labs to diagnose infectious disease such as Covid-19 in Sarawak.

“Besides, molecular laboratories which specialises in the identification and detection of Covid-19 have been operational in five hospitals.

“They are located at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), the Sibu Hospital, the Bintulu Hospital, the Miri Hospital and the Sarawak Heart Centre,” he said

Aaron added that University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and the Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) also provide Covid-19 testing.

He disclosed that the daily testing capacity for Covid-19 in Sarawak was 2,226 cases.

As of August 6, Aaron said a total of 91,156 swab tests for Covid-19 have been conducted in Sarawak. —DayakDaily
