BAU, June 26: Grassroots leaders ought to work closely with Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) to dispel fake news which have a negative impact on the development of Sarawak and her people.
In making the call, Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin said this was critical particularly in light of the widespread use of social media.
“With the intrusion of social media that we are facing today, there tends to be fake and unreliable news, which may affect our daily lives.
“So it is very important for grassroots leaders and the people at large to work with Ukas to thwart all these,” Willie said at the Kuching Division ‘Ziarah Ngabang Gawai 2023’ programme at Serembu Cultural and Community Centre, Kampung Peninjau Lama on Saturday night (June 24).
Willie, who represented Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh, said that fake news, if not countered, will influence the people for bad reasons.
Willie also touched on native customary rights (NCR) land surveying in Sarawak, which is acknowledged by the federal government.
“NCR land surveying is a genuine effort by the Sarawak government and the federal government recognised it.
“This can be seen with the RM10 million allocation by Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” he stressed.
Anwar made the announcement during the Gawai Dayak open house hosted by the Sarawak government early this month.
Willie lauded the Gawai Dayak celebration as a way to bring people of different races and religions together.
Earlier, Ukas director Samuel Simon advised the public not to share fake news.
“We need to find out the authenticity of the news before we share with others,” he pointed out, adding that sharing fake news is an offence. — DayakDaily
