GPS’ Wee wants to restore Padungan to former glory days

KUCHING, Dec 10: Developing the local economy, and improving infrastructure development and access to healthcare as well as welfare facilities, are among the five key factors outlined in Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate Dato Wee Hong Seng’s manifesto for the N9 Padungan constituency.

Wee emphasised that he will fight continuously to return Padungan to its former glory days as Kuching’s city centre, by way of improving and facilitating commercial activities post-Covid-19 pandemic, via representation in the State government and State assembly.

“I will also advocate regulation and legislation changes in the State Legislative Assembly to better preserve Padungan’s unique historical and cultural values.


“I will focus on making Padungan constituency a priority area for Sarawak’s tourism planning, including proposing legislation and implementing business-friendly policies that would enhance the ease of doing business.

“I will also set up employment centres to bridge demand (employers) and supply (jobseekers) in the labour market in Padungan constituency,” said Wee during a press conference to launch his manifesto held via Zoom today.

Wee said to improve access to healthcare and welfare facilities, he will ensure consistent State government funding to increase and improve Padungan’s public infrastructure such as roads, buildings and public amenities.

“This includes introducing and implementing new technologies for the development of Padungan’s infrastructure and ensuring adequate and better coverage of public transportation routing to Padungan area, by way of engaging with commuters from Padungan constituency through the State assembly service centre,” he added.

Wee also vowed to set up and promote aged care and welfare centres within Padungan systematically in order to improve access to healthcare and welfare facilities in the constituency.

He said he would advocate for the allocation of more funding to upgrade community centres, sports facilities and youth centres in Padungan, as well as the construction of more pedestrian sidewalks and cycling lanes to encourage healthy living.

He would also ensure more CCTVs are installed and active in Padungan area, to prevent crime and make the streets safer.

“We also would like to improve the regulation related to crime prevention by way of empowering and facilitating crime prevention entities, and advocating for the setting up of rehabilitation and training centres for the unemployed within Padungan and Kuching, so that no one will have to resort to street crime,” he added.

As for digital transformation and support for start-ups, Wee said he will be advocating for the digitalisation of traditional businesses by way of providing adequate funding, assistance, and facilities in Padungan area for businesses that wants to transform digitally.

“Apart from that, I will ensure proper and fast implementation of the State government’s digital transformation programmes in Padungan constituency, and the same time advocate for the setting up of incubation centres for start-ups to attract more youth and make Padungan more vibrant,” he added. — DayakDaily
