KUCHING, Oct 21: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) elected representatives have been urged to demonstrate how government policies have improved people’s lives as they assess their performance ahead of the next Sarawak election.

GPS Backbenchers Club chairman Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman called on representatives to reflect on how far they had fulfilled the expectations they carried when first elected, including helping communities, resolving problems and bringing meaningful changes to their constituencies.

He acknowledged that while there were achievements to be proud of after almost a full term, much more remained to be done.

“When we were first elected as representatives, we carried great hopes. We wanted to help the community, solve problems and bring change to our respective areas.

“Today, after almost one full term, we can look back at how far we have fulfilled those expectations. Certainly, there are achievements we can be proud of, but we also acknowledge that there is still much more to be done,” he said during the GPS Backbenchers Night here on Wednesday (Oct 21).

Fazzrudin highlighted Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s recent winding-up speech in the State Legislative Assembly (DUS), which focused on the people behind government policies and development initiatives.

He noted that stories of individuals from different racial, religious and social backgrounds demonstrated how government policies could translate into tangible benefits.

“Behind every policy there is a person, behind every education there is a family, and behind every success story there is a future being built,” he said.

He urged representatives to look beyond development figures, allocations and projects by highlighting the experiences of people whose lives had improved through government initiatives.

While figures demonstrated the scale of development, he stressed that beneficiaries’ experiences showed its actual impact on communities.

As the current DUS term approaches its expected expiry in February 2027, Fazzrudin expressed confidence that GPS members would remain united behind Abang Johari in the next election, regardless of the roles assigned to them.

“Whether we are playing up front, in midfield, in goal or coming on as substitutes, I am confident that we will stand together and support the Premier in the coming election,” he said. — DayakDaily
