KUCHING, Feb 27: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will stick to its initial stand of supporting interim Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad with the hope that the current political impasse will end soon for the sake of the nation’s interest.
Its Secretary General Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi said GPS was consistent in its stand and will not waver amid political uncertainties where leaders of other parties go back to their initial decision.
“When the whole political episode erupted, everyone pledged support for Dr Mahathir.
“We have our own view and basis, and we made the decision to throw our support for Dr Mahathir for the sake of the nation’s interests.
“This stand has not changed despite other parties have turned back against their own words the next day to come out with a new decision. We will not be part of that ‘twist and turn” episode,” Nanta told DayakDaily.
He said from the very beginning, GPS had never been part of Pakatan Harapan (PH).
“Whatever happened, PH leaders are the ones inflicting it upon themselves. GPS was never part of it nor the cause of the political chaos and we want to stay this way,” said Nanta.
The Kapit MP said that however the situation evolves, GPS will always remain steadfast in its collective decision and avoid being swept by the chaos to ensure not only Malaysia’s stability but particularly Sarawak’s – politically and economically.
“When GPS made the promise, it intends to keep it. This is our principle. The collective decision we made before the King is sealed, and that shall be our stand regardless of the fluid political development in Kuala Lumpur,” he said.
Nanta said GPS top leadership was steadfast in sticking to its collective decision and that has given confidence to GPS MPs to know how to deal with the whole dramatic political situation and how to explain to their voters.
“We appreciate the fact that GPS president Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari (Tun Openg) has been very wise and steady in handling this chaotic situation with every decision made without compromising Sarawak’s interests.
“GPS stands firm as a solid rock and we believe by being firm and level-minded, we will sail through this stormy weather unscathed where Sarawak’s economy and wellbeing will remain secure.
“At this time of uncertainties, I appeal to all Sarawakians to stand together with us to ascertain that Sarawak’s interests and well-being will be protected and uncompromised,” said Nanta.—DayakDaily
