KUCHING, Oct 15: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP)’s Opar branch chairman Niponi Undek is confident that GPS can win the seat in the coming state election which is due by June next year.
He disclosed his assessment was based on his visit to 50 out of the 58 villages in the constituency.
“The response from the ground has been very encouraging. So, I believe that GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) can win the seat and wrest back the seat from the incumbent who is now with the opposition,” Niponi told DayakDaily when met today.
Opar, a Bidayuh majority seat with some 12,000 voters, is currently represented by Datuk Ranum Mina of Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB).
Niponi expressed his hope that the people will support GPS in the coming state election as its policy encompasses all regardless of race and religion.
“The policy of GPS under (Chief Minister) Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg will ensure that development will reach all Sarawakians. So, we hope that our people in Opar will stand solidly behind Abang Jo and support GPS in the coming state election,” he said.
Niponi, who has been endorsed by his party to promote GPS in the constituency, said his team of 900 individuals will be able to visit the remaining eight villages by end of this month.
Niponi, 58, who was the former director of Public Health College, Kota Sentosa, Kuching, prior to his early retirement is a Bidayuh Selako from Kampung Tebaro, Jalan Lundu-Sematan.
Besides the Bidayuhs, there are some 1,000 Iban voters, 300 Malay voters and 200 Chinese voters in Opar. — DayakDaily
