KUCHING, Oct 7: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has long been ready for the coming 15th General Election (GE15), says Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Rumours have it that elections may be called very soon, with Umno leaders and major forces in Peninsular Malaysia pushing hard for it to be held this year.

“Oh, we have been ready for it since a long time ago,” Abang Johari told reporters in a press conference after officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Hikmah Complex and Tahfiz Hikmah School at Jalan Pustaka here today.

When asked whether the meeting with all 19 GPS MPs in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday (Oct 4) touched on any GE15 preparations, Abang Johari said they only discussed matters regarding Sarawak’s representative in the Inland Revenue Board (IRB).

“It’s just a normal discussion. We talked about IRB matters because the proposed ordinance amendment will be tabled in the current (Parliament) session and nothing else,” he said.

On a related topic, he said Sarawak has insisted on naming its State financial secretary to represent Sarawak in the IRB to facilitate the provision of annual special grants.

For that to happen, he said the federal government had proposed the amendment to the IRB ordinance, which is expected to be tabled in the current Parliament sitting. — DayakDaily
