KUCHING, May 11: The government will soon finalise the mechanism for the proposed review of RON95 petrol subsidies involving higher-income groups, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In a TVS news report, he said that the proposal is currently in its final stage of assessment, with discussions among ministries and relevant committees still underway.

“The proposal was tabled about a month ago by the task force chaired by Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican. It has since been reviewed, and discussions have been held on whether it should apply to the T5, T10, T15, or T20 income groups.

“In principle, we agree, but we want to ensure it does not affect the upper-middle class. They are working on it, and I hope it will be finalised soon,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a dialogue session at Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (May 10).

The move forms part of the government’s broader subsidy rationalisation plan aimed at improving fiscal management while ensuring assistance is better targeted at those most in need.

Previously, several parties within the unity government proposed reviewing subsidies for higher-income earners and redirecting the savings towards lower- and middle-income households facing rising living costs. — DayakDaily
