KUCHING, Oct 17: The Cabinet has proposed three key measures to enhance safety in schools, including a ban on smartphone use among students aged 16 and below.

In a Bernama news, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the proposal aims to tackle disciplinary problems, the negative influence of social media, and excessive online gaming, all of which have been linked to bullying and other forms of misconduct in schools.

“The proposed ban on smartphones for students aged 16 and below is still under review. While many countries that have implemented similar measures still allow limited use among children, I believe we need to take a firm stand on this matter,” he told reporters after performing Friday prayers at Surau Jannatul Firdaus PPAM Seruling, Precinct 5, Putrajaya today.

Anwar pointed out that the Cabinet also recommended that the police and the Ministry of Home Affairs intensify security monitoring in schools to ensure a safer learning environment.

In addition, the Cabinet suggested that the education curriculum be further strengthened with the support of parents and Parent-Teacher Associations (PIBG) to instill positive values and moral character among students.

“Under the Madani concept, we emphasise values, ethics, and excellence in education. However, these must be truly internalised. Many students receive Islamic education, including tahfiz studies, but awareness and understanding are not always fully practiced,” he said.

Anwar added that Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek will soon provide a more detailed explanation of the proposal and engage with schools, PIBG, and community representatives for feedback.

“I hope all parties, including headmasters, principals, teachers, and parents, will give their full cooperation. Sometimes, issues arise due to misunderstandings or differing priorities,” he said.— DayakDaily
