KUCHING, Nov 27: Development in Belaga is set for a stronger push following Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s commitment to accelerate several strategic projects in the area, particularly in energy infrastructure, housing, and public amenities.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Liwan Lagang, said one of the key projects approved is the extension of the electricity grid from Belaga to Nanga Merit. The 135-kilometre route is expected to bring substantial benefits to rural communities along the corridor.

Regarding the Skim Perumahan Bantuan Kerajaan (SPBK) housing project, Liwan said the Premier had agreed that it should be implemented in Belaga.

“As for the SPBK housing project, which the Premier also agreed should be implemented in Belaga, we will be working closely with the Land and Survey Department to obtain further details.

“We have received very positive support from the Premier,” he said when speaking to reporters after paying a courtesy call on the Premier at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Complex here on Nov 26, 2025.

The visit included more than 20 community and village leaders (KMKK) from the Belaga–Merit area, who presented development proposals and highlighted the needs of their respective communities.

Liwan also said the leaders requested that the RM20-million Belaga Square project be expedited.

In addition, the Premier has agreed to allocate an extra RM5 million for the construction of Belaga Stadium, further enhancing sports facilities and opportunities for youth activities in the district.
