BELAGA, Aug 5: I thought they were just ordinary vegetable fritters with a funny bowl shape.
But, of course, no. The special sambal sauce in the middle made all the difference! It tastes a little sweet, salty, and spicy altogether.
Mohd Erzidinie Abdullah, who has been making this local Malay snack called ‘kuih kicap’ for the last ten years, said the sambal sauce is made from his secret recipe.
When met by DayakDaily at the Belaga Regatta 2023 at Belaga Waterfront here, he said he would be frying fritters the same every single day, but at his café, if not for the regatta festival.
He said the café, Nur Cafe Dini, is situated in town, behind the Belaga Hotel.
Mohd Erzidinie, an Iban originally from Bintulu, converted to Islam after marriage and moved to Kampung Melayu, Belaga, about 17 years ago.
Other than the ‘kuih kicap’, he also sells prawn and banana fritters.
The prices are cheap at only RM1 for two pieces of ‘kuih kicap’ and RM1 for five pieces of prawn fritters.
So, have you ever tried the ‘kuih kicap’ from Belaga? If not, you know where to go when you visit Belaga next time. — DayakDaily
