Go for gold: Premier expresses confidence in Sarawak’s athletes for Sukma 2024

KUCHING, May 9: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has high hopes for Sarawak athletes to achieve gold and clinch the overall championship at the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024.

Speaking at the ‘Our Star, Our Pride’ event marking 100 days to Sukma 2024 at Pullman Hotel today, Abang Johari urged Sarawak athletes to strive for gold medals and dominate the podium.


“I want to see gold, not silver, not bronze, but gold,” he emphasised, highlighting the State’s readiness to support athletes in their quest for victory.

Encouraging athletes to emulate the dedication of world champions like Datuk Pandelela Rinong and Para Sukma 2024 participants, Abang Johari emphasised the importance of hard work and determination.

He expressed his aspiration to witness Sarawakian athletes proudly standing on the podium while the Sarawak anthem plays and the flag flies high in the stadium.

Abang Johari assured that athletes who achieve gold in Sukma 2024 will be rewarded, though the specific incentives will be determined based on performance.

Ahead of the event, Abang Johari bid farewell to the second group of 483 athletes heading to the Warrior Camp at Kem Putra Sentosa Retreat Sematan.

Sukma 2024, hosted by Sarawak, will take place from August 17 to 24.

Among those present were Minister of Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Karim Abdul Rahman Hamzah; Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Development cum Minister-in-charge of Para SUKMA 2024 Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah; Sarawak Sukma 2024 Chef De Mission and Deputy Minister of Youth, Sport And Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu as well as Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki. — DayakDaily
