KUCHING, Feb 12: Sarawak has been selected to host the 9th World Society of Disaster Nursing (WSDN) International Research Conference 2026, set to take place at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) from Sept 17 to 19.
According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian described the conference, the first of its kind in the State, as a significant recognition for Sarawak.
He said it provides a strategic platform for exchanging emergency technologies, innovative solutions, and practical approaches to strengthen disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.
He highlighted the timeliness of the event, noting the increasing frequency of natural disasters, partly driven by global climate change.
“This conference, being held in Sarawak for the first time, is highly significant for the State as host.
“Natural disasters, whether we are prepared or not, are becoming more frequent, with some linked to climate change. Last year, for instance, we witnessed the worst flooding in Bintulu, alongside other unforeseen incidents,” he said at a press conference at BCCK today.
Dr Sim, who is also Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, noted that the conference is expected to attract around 500 delegates from across the globe, offering Sarawak the chance to exchange expertise, expand collaborative networks, and enhance the disaster management capacity of local institutions.
He also emphasised the value of international participation, citing countries such as Japan, renowned for its experience in natural disaster management, which will bring critical insights and knowledge to conference discussions.
Also present at the press conference were WSDN chairperson Professor Dr Sonoe Mashino, BESarawak acting CEO Jason Tan, conference chair Dr Nurul’Ain Ahayalimudin, and head of the Unimas Department of Nursing Dayang Zuraina Abang Kashim. — DayakDaily
