KUCHING, June 17: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) outgoing Youth chief Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu has called for government assistance to allow 40,000 Sarawakian teens who have reached the age of 17 to take their driving licence tests.
In proposing this, he said the assistance would help prepare the youths to start venturing into the food delivery industry or courier service such as GrabFood, FoodPanda and J&T in the future once they acquire their driving licence.
“From the data we have, there’s about 40,000 youths who turn 17 every year.
“So if we can give assistance worth about RM300 per youth, not a direct cash assistance, but through driving schools, it would only cost about RM12 million,” he said when speaking at the opening ceremony of PBB Women and Youth Wings Assembly held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.
Rentap, who is also Layar assemblyman, further called upon the youths particularly those aged between 18 to 28, to “not be lazy and work hard and work smart”.
“If you are unemployed, it will be the doom of Sarawak. The robots or foreign workers will take over our jobs,” he added. — DayakDaily
