KUCHING, July 1: Transport Minister Anthony Loke has revealed that the bus that crashed in Genting Highlands and killed two Chinese nationals had an expired permit.

According to a news report by The Star, he said the bus had exceeded the time allowed to operate as the vehicle is 15 years old, and the driver was driving without a license.

He thus instructed the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) to take strict action against the local travel agency for clear violations of the law.

Loke, when addressing a press conference at Parliament building today, said the authorities are also considering invoking a rarely-used provision where those found guilty can be fined up to RM500,000, sentenced to two years in jail, or both.

He said the local travel agency is given three days to respond to the show-cause letter issued by the APAD.

The bus crash at about 11am on Saturday (June 29) was reported to have killed two tourists from China and injured 13 others after the vehicle skidded and hit a road divider on its way down from Genting Highlands. — DayakDaily
