KUCHING, July 12: Savoury and slurpy wantan mee or noodles is a popular dish at eateries, hawker stalls and kopitiam in Peninsular Malaysia. Much to the dismay of Sarawak residents who have developed a taste for it, finding the dish in the State is often not easy as it is not common here.
However, for Kuchingites who crave it, the dish can be found at Quan Yi Cafe at the heart of BDC Commercial Centre.
The cafe is operated by a West Malaysian named Ah Quan, and his wife. Both have been involved in the food business for many years.
“I came to Sarawak and worked for an employer serving West Malaysian style street foods like “lok lok” and others at a cafe in Sekama near Jalan Mendu.
“Then one-and-half-years ago, we opened up this place we called Quan Yi Cafe at BDC Commercial Centre after my name,” he told DayakDaily.
Ah Quan said the cafe served West Malaysian-style dishes like Hokkien mee, curry mee, pork noodles, wantan soup, wantan mee and many other types of noodle dishes.
“I named my wantan mee here as char siew wantan mee as I believe locals here would be attracted by my succulent char siew meat,” he said.
Ah Quan said the wantan noodle dish he served at his cafe consists of egg noodles tossed in savoury dark sauce and topped with slices of succulent char siew and leafy green choy sum.
“I serve a bowl of wantan dumpling soup with the dish. To savour with the noodles, pickled chillies are a must. These pickles are an easy accompaniment to make.
“My version is slightly different from that commonly found in West Malaysia but nevertheless it is savoury wantan mee and i hope locals here like it. A big plate is sold for RM7,” he said.
Quan Yi Cafe is located at 932, Ground Floor, BDC Commercial Centre, Jalan Stutong, 93250 Kuching. It opens daily from 7.30am to 4.30pm except Mondays and public holidays. It offers dine-in and takeaway services.
