KUCHING, Sept 22: The state Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) water bucket helicopter personnel were just about to call it a day when a distress call came through about a forest fire in the remote jungles of Mulu.

The Bomba water bucket helicopter had just concluded a mission putting out forest fires in Sri Aman, when its personnel were asked to mobilise to the fire’s location near a Penan settlement in Kampung Batu Bungan, Mulu.

Billows of smoke had been spotted near the Batu Bungan cliff trail, along the river and along the Lagang Cave trail at an elevation of about 100m.

At press time, the Bomba helicopter was still on its way even as the forest fire was slowly getting more visible from the village in Kampung Batu Bungan.

The nearest source of water form the fire would be Sungai Tutoh or Kuala Melinau, where the chopper would get its water to douse the fire. — DayakDaily
