KUCHING, Apr 13: Once completed, the Miri–Marudi, Marudi–Mulu (Kuala Melinau), and Long Lama–Long Panai (MMMLL) Road Project is expected to reduce travel time between Miri and Mulu from approximately nine hours to only two hours, improving accessibility and mobility for residents.
According to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, the project, which was first launched on Nov 15, 2025, and is valued at around RM3.8 billion, is expected to be completed within 48 months and is set to significantly impact development in the Baram area.
“Overall, the MMMLL project will provide a comprehensive transportation network, including 142km of main road alignment, 30.5km of access roads linking villages, and the construction of 11 major bridges and 11 minor bridges,” he said at the groundbreaking ceremony for Phase 1 of the Kick-Off Project for the MMMLL project in Marudi today. A copy of his text speech was made available to the media.
Uggah, who is also the Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, said that the kick-off project forms part of the main MMMLL project chain, bringing its own challenges and impact on local communities.
“To ensure sustainable development without compromising environmental conservation, elevated road construction methods will be implemented in areas with deep peat soil.
“This initiative supports the Sarawak government’s development agenda to ensure fair and inclusive access to infrastructure and facilities for all Sarawakians, whether in urban or rural areas,” he said.
He added that the project will also utilise advanced technologies proven effective in developed countries, including the Geographical Information System (GIS) for aerial mapping, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) for precise distance measurement and 3D mapping, and the Highway Information Modelling (HIM) to improve visualisation and decision-making accuracy.
Uggah added this aligns with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 and the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which emphasise sustainable, environmentally responsible, and inclusive development.
“Overall, the MMMLL Road Project is expected to benefit approximately 404,679 residents in the Miri Division by improving access to education and healthcare, facilitating agricultural distribution, and creating new economic opportunities, including tourism and commercial activities.
“The road network will also connect with Phase 2 of the Sarawak–Sabah Link Road (SSLR), demonstrating both the Sarawak and federal governments’ commitment to establishing comprehensive connectivity for the well-being of the people,” he said. — DayakDaily
