KUCHING, Mar 19: Journalists have been urged to exercise greater responsibility in framing news, as the same set of facts can generate markedly different public perceptions depending on how they are presented.

Speaking at the Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA) Chinese New Year media night on Wednesday (March 18), Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said headlines and narrative framing play a decisive role in shaping audience interpretation of issues.

“Identical data or statements can be framed in different ways with one highlighting benefits received, while another emphasising contributions made, which can lead to contrasting public reactions.

“Audiences who rely solely on headlines without reading full reports may form incomplete conclusions,” he said.

In this regard, he stressed that journalists must ensure their reporting is accurate, credible and properly contextualised.

“This is not just about reporting facts, but about ensuring the narrative is fair and reflects the full picture,” he added.
