KUCHING, June 8: Four rabies-positive cases have been reported this week, with all the victims bitten by stray dogs.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng disclosed that the positive cases were detected in the Batu Kawa area, eMart Batu Kawa, Seventh-day Adventist Church in Kampung Bumbok in Padawan, and Jalan Seringgok in Bau.
“The public must increase vigilance, not only regarding their own pets but also stray dogs in their surroundings.
“Those who find their pets or stray dogs exhibiting suspicious behaviours, especially related to rabies, should immediately contact their neighbourhood committees or the local authorities,” he said during the ShallWeeTalk live session on Saturday (June 8).
Wee emphasised that the public needs to take extra precautions and measures as cases have been reported every week and furthermore, spreading to other areas as far as Padawan.
“Pet owners are reminded to bring their animals for their annual anti-rabies vaccination and license renewal if they have not done so to avoid penalties,” he urged.
With free vaccination provided by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Sarawak, Wee said there is no reason for people not to take action and play a part in Sarawak’s fight against rabies, which is preventable.
“The campaign is ongoing to raise awareness about rabies and vaccination throughout the city, so let’s cooperate in ensuring the safety and health of our community. It is the responsibility of every citizen. We do not want to see people becoming the victims, and we are hopeful of seeing zero cases,” he added. — DayakDaily
