KUCHING, Sept 23: The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Sarawak has issued four prohibition notices to a construction company following a fatal accident that killed a 33-year-old worker at a worksite in Muara Tebas Land District along Jalan Stutong on Sept 20.
DOSH Sarawak director’s office confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 15(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.
“Legal action will be taken against the responsible parties if violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514) are proven. Under this Act, the maximum penalty for the employer is RM500,000 upon conviction,” read the statement posted on its official social media on Monday (Sept 22).
An investigation team from DOSH Sarawak was deployed to the scene to carry out investigations.
Preliminary findings revealed that the victim, a Malaysian man, was untying wire ties on scaffolding at the lower part of the building when a crane operator was lifting construction materials, including bricks and lintels, to the seventh floor.
During the lifting process, a lintel fell and struck the victim on the head, causing severe injuries.
He was immediately assisted by his co-workers before the authorities and medical personnel were contacted. However, he was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was retrieved at around 1pm.
DOSH reminded employers that they are legally responsible for ensuring the safety, health, and welfare of workers at the workplace, and to take all necessary precautions to prevent accidents. — DayakDaily
