KUCHING, Aug 13: All 59 students from four Henry Gurney schools under the Malaysian Prison Department, including those in Sarawak, have achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), with some attaining excellent results.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said 24 students, or 40 per cent of the candidates, obtained at least 1A, including one student who scored 6As.

“This achievement is the result of collaboration between the schools, teaching staff, the implementation of academic intervention programmes and specialised rehabilitation modules which shape positive character and resilience among the students,” he said when responding to a question in the Dewan Rakyat today, as reported by TVS.

The four schools are Sekolah Henry Gurney Teluk Mas, Melaka (412 inmates), Sekolah Henry Gurney Keningau, Sabah (92 inmates), Sekolah Henry Gurney Puncak Borneo, Sarawak (142 inmates), and Sekolah Henry Gurney Wanita Kota Kinabalu, Sabah (9 inmates), bringing the total number of inmates across the four institutions to 655 as of July 9, 2025.

Apart from academic excellence, Shamsul said Henry Gurney Schools also focus on technical and vocational education and training (TVET) to prepare students for the job market.

He explained that the effectiveness of rehabilitation modules is assessed continuously, covering academic performance, skills, sports achievements and employability after completing the programme.

“Inmates also receive counselling support through correctional guidance modules conducted by guidance teachers, counsellors and psychology officers to develop potential and boost self-confidence,” he said.

Shamsul stressed that this success proves Henry Gurney Schools are not merely rehabilitation centres, but platforms offering second chances for youths to return to society as responsible, productive and high-integrity individuals. — DayakDaily
