KUCHING, Aug 7: Former Sarawak Ranger Ujang Ijau has passed away at 8pm yesterday (Aug 6).
The news of his passing was conveyed by his grandchild through the Sarawak Edition page on Facebook.
The body of the deceased is currently at Rh Radin Wilson, Penebak Ulu Layar, Betong.
A funeral wake would be done tomorrow (Aug 8) before his burial the following day (Aug 9).
The late Ujang recently participated in the 60 Years of Sarawak Independence parade at Padang Merdeka on July 22.
Sarawak Rangers was founded in 1862 and first commanded by William Henry Rodway from 1862 until 1870 and the second time in 1872 until his retirement in 1881.
The forces were highly skilled in jungle warfare and general policing duties, equipped with various Western rifles, cannons and native weaponry.
It was disbanded for a few years until 1932, only to be reformed as Sarawak Constabulary and mobilised for the Second World War, in which they attempted to defend Sarawak from the Japanese invasion in 1942 at the start of the Pacific War.
In present times, they were voices urging the government to revive the Sarawak Rangers security force to guard the State’s borders. — DayakDaily
