KUCHING, Aug 14: Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie, who is a former Federal Court Judge at the Palace of Justice, has been appointed to lead the Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Future Fund’s Board of Guardians.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced today at a press conference at Wisma Bapa Malaysia in Petra Jaya here that the Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Future Fund is expected to commence operation on January 1, 2024.
This follows the appointment of nine members to the Fund’s Board of Guardians led by Sulong, as the chairman.
Abang Johari stated that such appointments would be for a three-year term.
“I believe the diverse and extensive experiences and strong credentials of these distinguished professionals will be invaluable and of great advantage to the Fund moving forward in achieving its objectives.
“Upon finalising their appointments, we target the Fund to commence in 2024, having put in place all the structural and governance frameworks,” Abang Johari said.
Sulong has more than 30 years of legal and judicial experience. Prior to his career in the judiciary, he served the State government for 17 years in various leadership capacities.
Presently, Sulong is the chairman of the Board of Directors of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and he also holds several directorships in public-listed companies.
Meanwhile, the other eight members of the Board of Guardians for the Fund are Tan Sri Datuk Amar Leonard Linggi Jugah; Tan Sri Ahmad Nizam Salleh; Datuk Iain John Lo; Grainne Dooley; Mohsen Fahmi; Datu Soedirman Aini; Dato Sri Talat Mahmood Abd Rashid; and Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar.
Linggi is the chairman of Limar Group and is active in charitable foundations and community service.
He is also the chairman and managing trustee of the Tun Jugah Foundation and the Dayak Cultural Foundation, respectively.
He was one of the pioneer figures responsible for the establishment of Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 2003 and is presently the advisor to the Chamber’s Supreme Council.
Ahmad Nizam was formerly the chairman of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) from 2018 to 2021, and prior to that, he served Petronas in various leadership positions for 37 years.
He is presently the chairman of KLCC Group of Companies and the chairman of Pelaburan Hartanah Berhad.
Lo is a former chairman of Shell Malaysia Ltd with extensive experience and roles for over 30 years in Shell business both in Malaysia and abroad.
He is presently the independent non-executive director of RHB Bank Berhad, RHB Investment Bank Berhad, and Digi Telecommunication.
Dooley has significant experience in investment and fund management and is well qualified in corporate governance and has a very impressive knowledge of financial matters, having sat on several highly regulated financial services boards.
Presently, she is holds non-executive board roles in fund management companies such as Interactive Brokers (Ireland), Haven Green Investment Management, and Forestay Capital II.
Mohsen has spent most of his career in the United States of America and the United Kingdom, with his last posting with Pacific Investment Management Company LLC (PIMCO) US as a member of the Investment Committee, where he was involved in setting investment strategy for the firm’s US$2.0 trillion in assets.
He is also a member of the Investment Advisory Committee for Charitable Foundation.
Soedirman has served the state government for 24 years in various leadership capacities and prior to that, he was with Petronas for 13 years.
Presently, he is a director of Permodalan Nasional Berhad and sits on the board of various government-linked companies and non-governmental organisations.
Talat Mahmood is the State Attorney General of Sarawak and will be an ex-officio member of the Board.
Wan Lizozman is the State Financial Secretary of Sarawak and will be an ex-officio member of the Board. — DayakDaily
