KUCHING, July 26: Focus should be given towards Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) And Technical, Vocational and Education Training (TVET) to develop Sarawak’s natural resources.
In stating this, Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, said Sarawak is rich in resources such as oil and gas, timber, agriculture and tourism that require education in such fields for sustainable development.
“We ought to enhance our education in schools towards STEM and work with universities, research institutes and industries to have industrial training, practicals in parallel with theories to enable our students to understand and adapt STEM subjects.
“At the same time, we also need to also prepare our teachers for such subjects to develop our natural resourced to compete globally,” Dr Jerip pointed out today at the launching of Project of Dream Realised (Pro-DR) roadshow at 10th Mile Community Hall, Kota Padawan, organised by TEGAS Community Innovative Learning team.
Dr Jerip stressed that with the rapid development of technology, STEM and TVET are becoming the driving force for economic growth and innovation, and necessary to prepare the younger generation to face future challenges and opportunities.
“Sarawak depends on our capability to embrace STEM and TVET to position ourselves as an innovation centre, (and for) sustainability and economic growth in the region,” the Mambong assemblyman
asserted.
The roadshow, which is being held for a month has attracted the participation of 35 institutions and agencies.
Present at the function were Sarawak Administrative Officer from Padawan sub-district office Julius Scott Sapong, among others. — DayakDaily
