Floods: 473 victims from 132 families evacuated to 13 relief centres in S’wak as of 11am (Jan 9)

KUCHING, Jan 9: Thirteen temporary evacuation centres (PPS) are currently in operation across several divisions in Sarawak as of 11am today due to floods.

According to the Sarawak Civil Defence Force (APM), a total of 132 families (KIR) involving 473 victims have been evacuated, with the overall evacuation trend reported as increasing.

In Miri, one relief centre remains operational at the Dewan Serbaguna SMK Berkenu, sheltering 26 families involving 72 victims, although the number of evacuees there has declined.

In Bau, the PPS at Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Bijuray Mongag, Krokong continues to house 22 families with 87 victims, while a new centre has been opened at Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Blimbin, Krokong, accommodating 15 families and 64 victims.

The Siburan area recorded the highest number of relief centres, with six PPS currently operating.

These include Balai Raya Kampung Betong Kanowit (six families, 26 victims), Dewan Taman Duranda Emas (information being updated as of press time), ST Peter Simpok (six families, 28 victims), Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Lintang Baru (16 families, 37 victims), SK Tanah Merah (30 families, 96 victims), and Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Kerumboi (seven families, 28 victims).

Of these centres in Siburan, ST Peter Simpok and SK Tanah Merah reported an increase, Balai Raya Kampung Betong Kanowit and Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Lintang Baru maintained their numbers, and PPS Dewan Taman Duranda Emas and Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Kerumboi were just opened.

In Samarahan, two centres are active—SK Endap (three families, nine victims) and Dewan Suarah (information being updated as of press time)— while Simunjan has opened a new PPS at Dewan Mesra Simunjan.

Meanwhile, Sibu recorded one relief centre at Dewan Kampung Jeriah, sheltering six victims from a single family.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and advise residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert and comply with evacuation instructions when issued. — DayakDaily
