KUCHING, Jan 30: The ongoing flood mitigation projects in Batu Kawa have reduced the impact of flooding in historically flood-prone areas, but the current excessive rainfall brought on by climate change demands bigger solutions, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian says.

In a recent post on Facebook, he pointed out that the usual flood-prone kampungs in Batu Kawa such as Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Kampung Sinar Budi Lama, Kampung Tengah Sungai and Desa Wira were not as badly affected this time due to the ongoing flood mitigation projects which cost more than RM250 million.

However, he said, while part of flood mitigation efforts along the Sungai Sarawak riverbank has helped protect homes in the kampung area, the river water is now encroaching from behind, highlighting the evolving nature of flood risks.

“But ultimately it’s the overflow of Sungai Sarawak due to excessive amount of rain water due to climate change we have to address,” he added.

Nevertheless, Dr Sim extended his gratitude to the highly experienced and well-prepared disaster management teams, including the Civil Defence Force (APM), Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), and the Welfare Department, for their dedication in assisting flood victims in the area.

He also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the recent landslide tragedy in Miri. – DayakDaily
