Flood alert: Kuching, Lundu low-lying areas at risk until Jan 1, 11pm

KUCHING, Dec 31: Residents in low-lying areas across Kuching and Lundu have been warned of potential flooding starting from 8am today until 11pm tomorrow (Jan 1), following a surge in river levels triggered by relentless heavy rain.

According to a flood warning issued by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Malaysia today, water levels in several major river basins are forecast to breach danger thresholds during this period.

In Kuching, the DID identified vulnerable locations within a five-kilometre radius of the Sarawak River basin. The areas at risk include the postcodes:

  • 93000: Sarawak General Hospital, Jalan McDougall
  • 93050: Jalan Matang, Kg. Sg. Bedaun
  • 93200: Jalan Mendu, Jalan Tong Wei Tah, Jalan Ong Tiang Swee
  • 93250: Jalan Liu Shan Bang, Jalan Penrissen, Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Taman Desa Wira, Jalan Ketitir, Jalan Burung Lilin, Jalan Sg. Tengah
  • 93350: Jalan Tong Wei Tah, Jalan Tabuan
  • 93400: Padang Merdeka
  • 93450: Jalan Kwong Lee Bank
  • 94000: Kg. Buso, Kg. Segong

Meanwhile, in Lundu, the Batang Kayan basin is under close monitor. Affected areas are expected to include Kampung Stunggang Melayu Baru, Kampung Stunggang Melayu Lama, Kampung Semunin, Kampung Dagang, Pekan Lundu, Kampung Seling Melayu, Kampung Sileng Dayak, Kampung Sungai Lundu, and Kampung Seketi.

The warning follows a continuous heavy rain alert issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) at 6.30am today.

The DID has advised the public to remain vigilant, as flooding may occur earlier or later than the forecasted timeframe depending on rainfall intensity. Residents are urged to follow instructions from the authorities and monitor real-time updates via the Public Info Banjir portal and official government channels. — DayakDaily
