MIRI, April 20: Five individuals, including a married couple, have been arrested in connection with the theft of two gold necklaces valued at RM10,000 from a jewellery shop in Jalan High Street here, yesterday (April 19).

The suspects were detained by officers from Miri’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) within four hours of the incident, which occurred at approximately 12.10pm.

Initial investigations revealed that the couple had entered the shop posing as legitimate customers. They deliberately spent around 20 minutes browsing items and engaging with the staff before grabbing two 916 gold chains weighing a total of 18.8 grammes.

The pair then fled the premises and escaped in a rented Perodua Aruz parked nearby.

Police immediately launched an operation, which led to the arrest of all five suspects at various locations across Miri, including a rented room in Jalan Kwang Tung. Authorities believe the stolen gold was quickly sold to a nearby moneylender.

During the raids, police also seized the getaway vehicle and recovered RM2,000 in cash, which was suspected to be proceeds from the sale of the stolen jewellery.

Background checks revealed that four of the five suspects have previous criminal records, including drug-related offences.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft. All suspects remain in custody as investigations continue. – DayakDaily
