MIRI, July 12: The fish-catching activity scheduled for July 8 and 9 at Taman Bulatan Pond was an internal initiative meant exclusively for selected schools, not a public event, clarifies Miri City Council (MCC).

In a press statement issued yesterday (July 11), MCC explained that the initiative was part of a supervised fish relocation programme aimed at controlling fish overpopulation in the pond, which had affected water quality and triggered complaints about odour and cloudy conditions.

The fish were intended to be moved to school ponds to support educational and beautification efforts.

However, the Council said the programme was disrupted after a letter intended solely for the participating schools was shared publicly, creating the impression that the event was open to the general public.

“This miscommunication disrupted the programme, and as a result, the activity has been postponed until further notice,” the statement said.

MCC emphasised that all fish relocation activities are conducted under Council supervision and expressed appreciation to the participating schools for their support.

“We regret any confusion caused. A new date will be announced once arrangements are finalised,” the Council added.

The public is advised to follow only official Council channels for accurate updates. — DayakDaily
