KAPIT, Nov 27: A 26-year-old pregnant woman, due to deliver soon, was evacuated from Rh Engkeng in Sungai Amang, near Jalan Selirik, early this morning as floodwaters rose to as high as three metres around the longhouse.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Kapit team was deployed at 5am after receiving an emergency call about flooding and landslides affecting several areas in Kapit.
The pregnant woman, along with a 28-year-old man and another adult woman, were evacuated by a boat provided by local villagers.
The rescue team deployed two sets of ropes to cross from a nearby bridge to the longhouse and to safely pull the boat to the bridge.
Bomba Kapit immediately contacted the Kapit Hospital Emergency Unit to send an ambulance to pick up the woman and prepare for her delivery.
However, as she was about to go into labour, she was rushed to the hospital in a local resident’s van.
It was reported that the mother safely gave birth to her sixth child at 7.30am.
Bomba Kapit continues to closely monitor the flooding and landslide situation in the area.
SK Sungai Kapit 1 on Jalan Bukit Goram was inundated with three feet of water. Firefighters reported that the water level in two units of the teachers’ quarters reached up to one foot.
However, no evacuation has been ordered at this time.
Earlier, authorities reported flooding in Selepong 3, Jalan Selirik, Utong junction and Taman Buluh Perindu, as well as a landslide incident at Bukit Goram. — DayakDaily
