SARATOK, July 9: A fire safety campaign was held at Rh Mendas Asal in Melupa, Krian, to raise awareness in creating a fire hazard-free longhouse environment.

Some 40 villagers took part in the safety awareness and prevention prgramme organised by the Fire and Rescue (Bomba) department. The 18-door longhouse, which was built in 2012, has 118 residents.

“We need to build awareness of fire safety to lower the risk of a fire incident, which can result in the loss of property or worse, lives.

“We also teach them how to douse fires in the early stages of an outbreak. It is our hope that this fire safety intervention programme will help keep the community safer,” said Saratok fire station chief Nazry Mohamat, who led the programme yesterday.

Other than talks, the firefighters also conducted safety and fire demonstration.

The villagers were also taught on how to use fire extinguishers in the event of a fire at the longhouse. Rh Mendas Asal is equipped with four fire extinguishers.

Nazry said such intervention programmes were vital to reduce or prevent longhouse fires. This especially important considering that longhouse communities were living together under one roof.

The firefighters also reminded the longhouse folks to take the 3P approach (precaution, prevention and protection) seriously, as this can help to prevent more serious cases involving fire. — DayakDaily
