MIRI, Nov 5: A 12-door longhouse in the remote village of Ba’ Abang, Long Sepatai, in the Baram-Akah area was destroyed by a fire on Sunday (Nov 3), leaving 54 people homeless, including a 2-month-old infant.
According to Sarawak Fire Operations Centre, the fire occurred in the afternoon, around 4pm and burned for approximately 30 minutes before burning out.
At the time, all the village’s residents were attending a service at Ba’ Abang Church, located nearby.
No one from the 12 affected families were injured.
The fire reduced all the longhouse units to ashes, leaving the families with no possessions or shelter.
A call to the Marudi Fire Station was logged at 9:56pm, hours after the flames had already subsided.
Due to challenging terrain, reaching the scene requires six to seven hours’ drive using four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicles from the nearest fire station in Marudi. ā DayakDaily
