KUCHING, Nov 22: A fire broke out again Friday evening (Nov 21) at the same unlicensed used tyre factory and storage facility at Batu 9, Jalan Indah Ria, where a massive blaze last month burned for a week and drew regulatory scrutiny from authorities.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak received the emergency call at 5.40pm and deployed teams from the Kota Samarahan and Kota Sentosa fire stations.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a pile of used tyres behind the premises ablaze, covering an estimated area of 30 by 40 square feet.

Fourteen personnel and two fire engines were involved in the operation.

Bomba Sarawak said firefighters were still carrying out suppression efforts as of 7.20pm Friday, using two hose lines measuring 300 feet each, two nozzles, and water sourced from the engine pump and a nearby hydrant.

The latest incident comes just weeks after a significant fire on Oct 29 at the same facility. That earlier blaze spread to a neighbouring plastics recycling factory and took firefighters a full week to completely extinguish.

Following the October incident, the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) and the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) confirmed that the premises had been operating as an unlicensed tyre storage facility.

NREB also opened an investigation paper into the owner for operating without a valid licence, assuring that appropriate action would be taken once investigations are completed. — DayakDaily
