KUCHING, July 1: A fire incident at Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park (KIWMP) facility in Mambong is under control.
According to Trienekens Group chief executive officer Stephen Chin in a statement today, a section of the sanitary landfill at the facility caught fire early Friday (June 30) morning.
“The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Siburan was alerted immediately, and efforts to extinguish the fire were carried out with the support of the company’s emergency response team (ERT) in the presence of the local authorities.
“Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the fire. We managed to control the fire by the end of Friday and continued to monitor the situation,” he said in a statement today.
However, according to Chin, earlier in the morning today, they discovered that the fire had flared up again and had spread quickly to other sections of the landfill.
“Bomba personnel and our teams were deployed again while facing several challenges such as low water pressure, hot weather, and strong winds,” he added.
He also assured that their teams are working with Bomba to control the spread of the fire and with risks minimised as fast as possible.
“As required by the Department of Environment (DOE) Sarawak, whose officials were also present on site, the company will continue to monitor the ambient air quality level in the area.
“Aside from Bomba and DOE, the company is also working closely with Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak to provide updates on the situation and ensure that similar occurrences will be minimised in the future,” he said. — DayakDaily
