Fire at Batu 9 tyre factory exposes illegal and unsafe operations

KUCHING, Nov 5: The fire at a tyre factory at Batu 9, Jalan Indah Ria, which took a week to be fully extinguished, has revealed that the premises had been operating storage activities without a valid licence.

According to a report by TVS, Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) assistant controller Dau Utau said that his party will open an investigation paper to identify reports of misconduct by the owner of the burnt factory premises, who carried out storage operations without any license. Action will only be taken against the owner of this premises after the investigation is completed.

“This factory has never submitted any application to be used as a storage premises during this period, our party has also not received any information from the public or any party regarding the existence of the factory, therefore, we are not aware of the factory’s operations before this incident occurred,” he told reporters at the site of the Batu 9 factory fire, Jalan Indah Ria yesterday.

Meanwhile, following the incident, the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) assured that it is committed to ensuring that health and cleanliness issues from the recent factory fire in Batu 9, Jalan Indah Ria do not affect nearby residents, warning that firm action will be taken against uncooperative premises owners. Deputy chairman Daily Joseph said MPKS, together with the Health Ministry, has been regularly monitoring the area and will continue enforcement to safeguard public welfare. – DayakDaily
