BETONG, May 21: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has reminded the people, especially longhouse folk, to be extremely cautious of fire this coming festive period as more people would be cooking and using electrical appliances.

Uggah gave this advice yesterday during a simple ceremony to hand over 155 fire extinguishers to 95 longhouse chiefs at Rumah Francis Nyangau in his state constituency of Bukit Saban.

He told those present that while it was useful to have fire extinguishers close at hand, the best fire prevention method is still exercising extreme care when cooking and using electrical appliances.

“I would certainly advise the people to be extremely cautious,” he reiterated.

Present at the event were Betong MP Datuk Robert Lawson Chuat, political secretary to the Chief Minister, Dr Richard Rapu, and Betong senior fire officer Henry Jugah.

Meanwhile, Henry said the new stock of fire extinguishers would be arriving soon, and each extinguisher would be given to every five family units in a longhouse.

However, they must attend a fire prevention and fire fighting course organised by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).

“There will be more fire prevention and fire fighting courses organised for longhouse folk in the division after the Hari Raya celebration,” he said. — DayakDaily
