KUCHING, Sept 16: The Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Sarawak government are still finalising the actual site for the Sarawak Cancer Centre project, which is planned to be situated in the vicinity of the Sarawak Heart Centre (SHC) in Kota Samarahan here.
Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the working committee for the project is currently assessing potential sites and other project details.
“We will do the groundwork first. This will then be presented to the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim), the Federal Cabinet and the Premier (of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg),” she told reporters during a visit to scout around the potential sites near SHC today.
Dr Zaliha was accompanied by Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Health Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni and senior officers from the Sarawak Health Department.
She emphasised that discussions on the project, which has been proposed for a long time, between the MOH and Sarawak government are still ongoing.
“If both Federal and Sarawak governments agree on the proposal and associated efforts, it will facilitate the project’s launch and we can progress to the next stage of developing the Sarawak Cancer Centre.
“With preparations ready and both parties give their approval, proceeding will be smoother,” she said.
Dr Zaliha hopes the project can be finalised really soon, and allowing the Prime Minister and Premier to deliver the good news.
The initial proposal to set up a cancer centre was put forward by Dr Sim in 2016.
Last year on Dec 4, Abang Johari said that the proposed centre is a collaboration between the Federal MOH and the Sarawak government.
This year, Sarawak has formed three technical working committees on finance, scope and manpower to expedite the establishment of the Sarawak Cancer Centre. — DayakDaily
