SIBU, July 16: Many house buyers in the State are still unaware of their rights when encountering defects in their property, says Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang.
He said that those with defects to their property have the right to file complaints with the Sarawak Housing Purchaser’s Claims Tribunal within 18 months.
“House purchasers have the right within these 18 months to refer some of their defect and grievances to the housing tribunal and this must be promoted over and over again. Still, many people are not aware of this.
“Some are being persuaded not to seek help during the 18 months, some are persuaded not to seek a legal advisor. So, I need to emphasise this,” he told reporters after officiating at the Saberkas Youth Fitness programme here today.
Tiang said that filing complaints may be done online, and the Housing Purchaser’s Claims Tribunal will be accessible in major cities and towns such as Sibu, Miri, Bintulu, and Limbang.
This make it easier for house purchasers to address their issues without having to travel to Kuching to initiate their claims.
He stressed that beyond these timeframes, the tribunal’s jurisdiction expires, and the warranty period also ends.
“Eighteen months is a golden time for them to check their home for any defect. Of course, they can complain to the developer to claim, but if their grievances are not being addressed properly, please quickly lodge your report with the housing tribunal,” he stressed. — DayakDaily
